Critical Facilities Engineer (Controls)

At Equinix, our Critical Facilities Engineers operate, manage, maintain, and repair critical and non-critical power systems, HVAC, BMS, plumbing, fire control & suppression, and all site services. Our critical facilities team also perform all related vendor support in a mission critical environment.  

Our engineers work across engineering disciplines and for this position we are looking to add to our onsite Controls expertise. Applicants should have a solid grounding in Controls (electrical and/or mechanical), be able to support the Controls Engineering team, but foremost must work as a Critical Facilities Engineer within the South Sydney Campus.

Broad experience with BMS programming, configuration and commissioning will be highly advantageous, and ideally recent service work will enable you to build your site expertise quickly and develop into the role. South Sydney Campus operates 5 sites across Alexandria and Mascot, so a desire to work across sites when required will be highly advantageous.

We are open to candidates at various levels of seniority, and will consider looking to those with significant experience in related industries, or someone with 2 + years carrying out similar Controls related duties, the latter which would mean coming in at a lower level and spending time with experienced Controls engineers as they build up confidence in the role

Key responsibilities: 

  • Completes all maintenance protocols, plans, activities on time and accurately, including daily, weekly, and monthly site checks. 
  • Work closely with our controls vendors to investigate and fix ongoing controls issues. 
  • Plan and implement logic changes to improve site PUE
  • Monitor site BMS, SCADA and control systems and carry out routine maintenance on these systems
  • Investigate / fault find alarms and issues with site BMS, SCADA and control systems and escalate issues as required
  • Manage and work with specialist vendors who maintain / service site BMS, SCADA and control systems
  • Assist colleagues and internal teams with control-related issues, investigations and works on site (eg. equipment repairs and replacements, new installs, project work, etc) 
  • Collaborate with the Controls Engineering to ensure any related strategies and architecture are implemented at site level
  • Take a lead role on site-based Controls related activity including project work, commissioning, BMS work, rollouts
  • Operating and specifically programming and configuration of Controls systems at times of a complex nature
  • Manage and oversee specialist vendors for all major works, planned repairs and maintenance to mechanical, electrical, and special systems. 
  • Performs minor changes to mechanical, electrical, and special systems if necessary.   
  • Participate in an on-call roster to act as the first responder for sites’ incidents, managing, resolving, and/or escalating critical issues outside of regular working hours.
  • Oversee plumbing and fire suppression systems for vendor activities. 
  • Coordinates/oversees work with vendors to ensure that maintenance activities are carried out as per Equinix’s requirements.
  • Creates engineering scripts (switching schedules) and undertakes safe switching practice. 
  • Ensures that all Equinix safety standards are followed, as well as quality procedures related to maintenance, including all Incident Management.
  • Reviews processes, procedures, and systems. Communicates process deviations and proposed changes to a higher level so that relevant follow-up measures can be carried out.

Qualifications, key skills and attributes:

  • Engineering Degree or Electrical/Mechanical Trade Certified
  • Understanding of varied Controls systems in a mission critical environment
  • Willingness and ability to adapt to new environment and critical infrastructure
  • Positive, collaborative mindset but with the ability to work autonomously when required and take ownership of delegated tasks
  • Proficiency in troubleshooting and repairing mechanical and electrical systems, that will become more complex over time
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to work under pressure in time-sensitive situations. 
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to interact effectively with cross-functional teams.
