xAI’s mission is to create AI systems that can accurately understand the universe and aid humanity in its pursuit of knowledge. Our team is small, highly motivated, and focused on engineering excellence. This organization is for individuals who appreciate challenging themselves and thrive on curiosity. We operate with a flat organizational structure. All employees are expected to be hands-on and to contribute directly to the company’s mission. Leadership is given to those who show initiative and consistently deliver excellence. Work ethic and strong prioritization skills are important. All engineers are expected to have strong communication skills. They should be able to concisely and accurately share knowledge with their teammates.

About the Role

You will design, deploy, and optimize large-scale battery energy storage systems (BESS) that power xAI’s AI training superclusters in Memphis. These systems, built on Tesla Megapack platforms, must deliver uninterrupted, high-density power at multi-megawatt scale while maintaining extreme reliability under variable AI workloads. You will own the end-to-end lifecycle—from site planning and integration to real-time performance tuning and long-term degradation management—ensuring the storage fleet exceeds 99.999% availability and maximizes round-trip efficiency.

Responsibilities

Lead electrical, mechanical, and thermal integration of Megapack-based BESS with on-site substations, inverters, and AI compute loads.

Develop control strategies and firmware logic for dynamic load balancing, peak shaving, and frequency regulation tailored to AI training power profiles.

Perform capacity modeling, cycle-life forecasting, and degradation analysis using field telemetry and digital-twin simulations.

Commission systems, validate nameplate performance, and implement predictive maintenance protocols to minimize downtime.

Collaborate with Tesla Energy teams on custom firmware, hardware revisions, and supply-chain scaling for xAI-specific duty cycles.

Ensure compliance with NEC, NFPA, IEEE 1547, and local grid interconnection requirements; author interconnection studies and reliability reports.

Drive root-cause investigations for any energy anomalies and implement corrective actions across the fleet.

Required Qualifications

BS or MS in Electrical, Mechanical, or Energy Systems Engineering.

5+ years in utility-scale BESS or industrial power systems.

Hands-on experience with lithium-ion systems ≥10 MWh, including PCS, BMS, EMS, and SCADA integration.

Proficiency in power system modeling tools (PSSE, PSCAD, ETAP) and control programming (Python, MATLAB, IEC 61850).

Demonstrated ability to manage multi-disciplinary projects under aggressive timelines.

Willingness to be on-site in Memphis for commissioning and critical operations.

Preferred Qualifications

Prior work with Tesla Megapack or Powerwall deployments.

PE license or NABCEP certification.

Experience in AI/datacenter power architectures or microgrid controls.
